With the arrival of the cold, our more tropical palm trees will have a hard time if we live in an area where temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. It is very normal that, if until recently they were perfect, with completely green and healthy leaves, now the tips begin to have brown or even yellow.

To avoid this, it is important to anticipate and take measures before the fresh returns. Now you should know that it’s never too late to know how to protect palm trees from the cold. Write down these tips.

Which palm trees will need protection from the cold?

The coconut tree is a palm tree that is very sensitive to cold

As important as protecting them is knowing which species need such protection, since it makes no sense to protect one, for example, Archontophoenix Alexandrae. which is in an area where the lowest temperature recorded throughout the year is -2ºC. So that, depending on both the plant in question and the climate we will have to protect one or the other.

In general, and to give us an idea, if the temperature drops below 15ºC we will have to protect the following:

  • Cocoa nuts (coconut tree)
  • Veitchia
  • Areca
  • Dypsis (except the D. decaryi and D. deceiving)
  • dictyocaryum
  • Rhopaloblast
  • Raffia
  • Cyrtostachys
  • And all the tropical ones.

On the other hand, if the temperature drops below 0º, the following will need protection:

  • wallichia
  • Allagoptera caudescens
  • Among others.

Transparent plastic

It can be used in the same way as anti-frost fabric, that is, wrapping the palm tree with it.

Put them at home

It is the most popular option. Palm trees, already young, are very decorative, so that winter is used to enjoy them indoors. But it is convenient to have them in a room where a lot of natural light enters and keep them away from drafts so that they do not suffer.

Padding

Dry leaf mulch

As long as we do not live in an area that is too cold for the palm tree, it will surely be enough to protect its roots with dry leaves or pine bark.
