What types of plants can you have in a pot? This question, although it may seem like an easy answer, is actually difficult to answer. There are plants that when you see them in the nursery it seems that they do not have to grow much more, but you take them home, change the pot and, with the passage of time, you realize that it has grown more than you had thought .
To avoid this I’m going to tell you what are the keys to acquiring plants that, regardless of their size, can always be kept in a pot.
To know which are the most suitable, we have to look above all at the size they have reached in the pot they are planted. For example, some types of plants that are not suitable would be trees and palm trees that, being in pots of 20-40cm, measure 2m or more and have a trunk thickness of about 2-4cm; and neither are cacti, succulents and similar plants that are in 40cm pots and measure between 60cm and 3m.
Of course, this is not always accurate, but from experience I can tell you that it is a good reference. Taking this into account, The plants that can be kept in a pot throughout their life are:
- Bulbous plants: gladioli, hyacinths, tulips,… all . Iris and Cannae may need a larger pot than the others, but they can be grown in a pot without any problem.
- Small palm trees: like the Chamaedorea or the Chamaerops. The Deeply shining and Howea forsteriana They can also be potted for many years, especially the latter as it has a very slow growth rate.
- Shrubbery: All shrubs can be potted, as they tolerate pruning very well.
- Trees: It is generally not recommended to have potted trees, but there are many that can be in it, such as citrus (orange or lemon) or grafted Japanese maples.
- Aromatic and flower plants: These plants, lacking woody stems, can live in a pot.
- Cactus and succulents: Most species will grow in pots without problem, such as cacti of the genus Mammillaria or Rebutia, and succulents of the genus Echeveria or Crassula.
