Pink hydrangea

These precious shrubs are the undisputed protagonists of temperate gardens around the world. Its beautiful pink, white or blue flowers attract the eyes of all plant lovers.

Do you want to decorate your patio or garden with them? Let’s see then how to care for hydrangeas.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas belong to the genus Hydrangea, and are native to Asia. They are plants considered acidophilicbecause they grow in acid soils. Likewise, they also have to be watered with a water whose pH is low, since otherwise they could suffer from chlorosis. If you have calcareous soil in your area, it is best to choose to have it in a pot with a specific substrate for these types of plants.

They are bushes that do not exceed one and a half meters in height, perfect for marking paths or keeping in a pot. And last but not least, they support pruning reasonably well; With which you can control its growth and give it the shape you like best without having to take any risk. But, important: it is preferable that it be pruned in autumn or towards the end of winter.

Blue hydrangea

The ideal location will generally be one where it receives direct sunlight. But if you live in a climate like the Mediterranean, where the sun is very intense in summer, you have to place it in the shade or partial shade to prevent its leaves from being damaged by the sun’s rays.

If we talk about irrigation, this it will have to be frequent throughout the growing season, that is, in spring and summer: one watering every 2-3 days will make it easy for your plant to develop. On the contrary, in autumn and winter we will decrease the frequency to 1-2 weekly irrigations.

Finally, an organic compost – such as worm castings – applied throughout the year will keep your hydrangea healthy and vigorous.
