Sometimes we wonder if it can be sown in summer. The temperature is usually high, but incredible as it may seem, you can grow seedlings all year round, including now in the warmest season. There are many plants that need to feel warm in order to germinate and grow. Numerous horticultural plants, perennial or annual flowers, trees, shrubs, palms and of course, cacti and succulents can be planted without problem.
We only have to take the precaution that the substrate does not dry out, but that it is always kept slightly damp. Do you want to know some plants that you can grow? We’ll tell you then.
Horticultural plants
If we want to enjoy a good harvest in autumn-winter, we can sow the following horticultural plants:
- Chard
- Lettuce
- Leeks
- Endives
- Carrots
- Coles
- Cauliflowers
- Radishes
As these are plants for human consumption, we will avoid fertilizing with chemical products. It is highly recommended and recommended to use organic, ecological fertilizers, such as manure or humus.
Flores
Flowering plants are the ones that undoubtedly brighten up the garden. Some of those that can be sown now are:

If we live in a cool climate, we will protect the seedlings from the cold (for example, in an open greenhouse) before winter arrives.
Cacti and succulents
Cacti and succulents need high temperatures to germinate, therefore all species can be planted now. It is very important to use a specific substrate for cacti, or to make one composed of: 60 & perlite, 30 & black peat and 10% vermiculite. It must be a very draining substrate, which prevents the substrate from being flooded.
Summer is also an ideal time to reproduce succulents by leaves. Take a leaf and put it lying in a pot with substrate, buried only a little by the area where the roots will come out. In the case of Aeonium and / or succulent trees, cut a branch and plant it in a pot. In no time they will take root.
Trees, shrubs and palms
Although most trees, shrubs and palms prefer spring to germinate, there are others that need heat to do so. Thus, those of tropical origin, such as the Plumeria tree (top photo), the Bird of Paradise flower (Queen Strelitzia), or palm trees like the coconut tree (Cocoa nuts) must now be sown in summer to achieve a higher germination percentage.
