Arugula Characteristics

When we talk about arugula scientifically we are talking about three different species, which are Eruca sativa , Diplotaxis tenuifolia and Diplotaxis muralis . The first one is an annual herb, that is, it germinates, grows, flowers, bears fruit and finally withers in a year; On the other hand, the other two are perennial herbs, which live for several years.

They are very adaptable and hardy, growing even in the poorest soils and in places where it rarely rains , such as the Maghreb, where their leaves turn a nice green color after the occasional rain. They can reach a height between 30 and 80cm. The inflorescences are small but decorative, white or yellow depending on the species.

How is it grown?

Arugula is a very easy vegetable to grow. So much so that you only have to follow the advice that we offer you to obtain an excellent harvest:

  • Sowing : in spring, directly in the seedbed with a universal cultivation substrate.
  • Transplant : when the seedlings have a manageable size (about 5-10cm high) you can move them to larger pots, or to the garden leaving a distance of 30cm between them.
  • Irrigation : although they resist drought, it is advisable to prevent the soil from remaining dry, so it is convenient to water every 2 or 3 days.
  • Fertilizer : it is not necessary, but it can be fertilized with organic fertilizers, spreading a 2-3cm layer around it if they are on the ground.
  • Harvest : 2-3 months after sowing.
