Geraniums and gypsies are great plants: they produce flowers for a good part of the year and do not require much care to be great. However, one of the most necessary tasks that anyone who grows them has to do is prune them if they want to get a greater quantity of precious flowers.
But When are geraniums and gypsies pruned? Choosing the right moment is very important, otherwise we could weaken them.
Pruning is a technique with which the growth and development of plants can be controlled. It is very necessary to do it especially in fruit trees, so that they produce low branches so that it is easier to pick their fruits, but it is also done in other plants, such as geraniums and gypsies. These plants are very pretty, but if its growth is not controlled there will come a time when its stems will grow everywhere. If that happens, they could become a bit sloppy.
To avoid it, with pruning scissors we proceed to eliminate those parts of the plants that are left overEither because they are taking energy away from the rest of the plants, because they have grown in an exaggerated way, or because we simply want to have specimens with a more compact shape.
When can they be pruned? It will depend on what we want to do to them. For example:
- Remove dry leaves and wilted flowers: can be done as they dry / wither.
- Remove diseased, weak or dry stems– the sick or weak can be removed in late summer; the dry ones, on the other hand, we can cut them whenever we want.
- Give it a compact shape: as it is a somewhat more drastic pruning, we have to wait until the end of winter to carry it out. In the case that we live in an area with a mild climate, without frosts or very weak, we could prune them at the beginning of autumn.
Thus, our geraniums and gypsies can continue to grow stronger if possible .
