When and how to water tomatoes

Tomatoes are high watering plants

Tomatoes are one of the easiest horticultural plants to grow that exist, so much so that regardless of whether or not we have a plot of land, we can enjoy the authentic flavor of their fruits produced without chemicals. But for it it is important to water them when necessary. How do you know that?

If you have doubts about it and you do not want your specimens to go thirsty or suffer from excess water, then I will explain when and how to water the tomatoes.

How is the watering of the tomatoes?

The tomato plant needs frequent watering to grow.

Water is basic to life, but whether we over-water or allow the soil to remain dry much longer than is appropriate, the roots will weaken and die. To avoid it, what we have to do is check the humidity of said soil or substrate. And, if we water when it has not yet dried enough, no matter how much water the tomato plant wants … we must always try to avoid both excesses and shortcomings.

Think about it: how do you feel when you drink a lot in one sitting? Upset, stomach pain, … It has happened to me, coming home thirsty and drinking half a liter of water in one sitting. After a while I regretted having drunk so much in such a short time. Well, something similar happens to plants.

Obviously, they will not have a stomach ache for obvious reasons , but it must be borne in mind that their roots can be damaged. If they are in constant contact with a very humid earth, in the end sooner or later they will suffocate … literally. They will run out of oxygen, they will weaken, … and that will be just what the fungi are looking for. These microorganisms proliferate in this type of environment, humid, and if they are also warm, our plant will run a high risk of becoming ill.

What to do to grow healthy? It’s simple: checking how dry or wet it is, something that is done in any of these ways:

  • Digging up the dirt a bit.
  • Using a digital moisture meter (enter at different points on the earth).
  • If they are in a pot, take it once watered and again after a few days.

How often should the tomatoes be watered?

Just as important as remembering to water is watering well. Therefore, it is necessary to use a irrigation system that is really suitable considering the culture medium. For instance, if the tomato plants are in the orchardthe ideal is to install a system of drip irrigation since it will allow us to have well watered plants at the same time that we will avoid losing water; Conversely, if they are potted I advise watering them with a watering can and also putting a plate under them.

Once the irrigation system has been chosen, How can we know that we are watering well? We will know if the earth is very humid, but not flooded. In addition, the leaves, flowers, or fruits should not be wetted since otherwise we could facilitate the appearance of fungi.

How often to water potted tomato plants?

Watering must be frequent, but not as frequent as if they were in the garden. Usually, They should be watered about 3 times a week in summer, but about 2 weekly the rest of the year. Use rainwater or lime-free water whenever you can, and avoid wetting the leaves, flowers, and fruits.

If you have a plate under it, for prevention it is advisable to remove the excess water. This makes it less likely that you will get a fungal infection.

If you have tomato plants in the orchard or garden, you will have to water them more often. During the summer it may be necessary to water them daily if the environment is very dry and warm, then the earth will dry out quickly; On the other hand, in spring they will be watered less, about twice a week more or less.
