Nowadays, especially due to the economic crisis, those of us who like plants look for various ways to acquire them without costing us much.
In this article we will talk about how to get plants at a great price, or even free.
There are three options:
- dividing some of our plants, which is known as division of kills
- by seeds
- making cuttings
By division of kills
It is the same plant, obtain several. How? In spring or autumn the plant is removed from the pot, and with a sharp knife previously disinfected with hydrogen peroxide, we proceed to cut the portion that interests us. Later we will plant it in a substrate with good drainagein semi-shadow, and we will water abundantly.
There are numerous plants that accept this means of reproduction. For example: Aspidistra (also known as Hall leaves), Agapanthus (or African flower), Gazania, Papyrus… In general, any plant that has a tendency to take out suckers or basal suckers can be reproduced in this way.
By seeds
Perhaps it is the most economical method, taking into account the number of plants obtained-price ratio. Currently you can buy bags full of seeds at a very good price. Or they can be obtained from our own plants.
The sowing method is very simple. We can sow the seeds in a yogurt pot, in pots, in trays, … anywhere we can think of. The substrate to be used must be newand that facilitates drainage. We will place the seedbed in semi-shade or in the sun, depending on the species.
By cuttings
There are two ways for a cutting to root:
- Place it in a container with water
- Plant it directly in a pot
The species that root in water are the following: Poto, Croton, Drácenas, Alocasia, Espatifilo… They are cuttings of green stems.
And those that we must plant in a pot, after impregnating the base with rooting hormones, are those that are woody or semi-woody: Fig, Holly, Liquidambar, Maple, Rose, … in general any species of tree or shrub can be reproduced by cuttings .
We will be in crisis, but … the truth is that we can still obtain plants at a very good price, even for free, don’t you think?
